Three local Aboriginal construction companies won the tender to work on the Cooling Pond at the Sydney Tar Ponds project - Norman Morris Construction, MB2 Excavating & Construction, and the Membertou Remediation Group.


Norman Morris Construction
Eskasoni

Morris has operated his construction company in the first Nation community of Eskasoni for many years, mostly centered around home construction, sewer and water, and other community construction. The work on the Sydney Tar Ponds Cleanup project has expanded the capacity, experience and capability of his business. This includes firsthand experience in the unique Solidification and Stabilization process being used at the Sydney Tar Ponds project. His daughter Mona is also very involved in the management of the Norman Morris Construction Company. This company is a relatively small business, but, as most businesses, they hire, lease and partner when added resources are needed. The Morris family also owns several other businesses in their community.

Membertou

MB2 Excavating and Construction of Membertou, Nova Scotia, is owned and operated by Robin Googoo. Robin operates several businesses and has demonstrated his entrepreneurial ability. MB2 has a large inventory of heavy equipment and as with the other local Aboriginal construction companies, has expanded its capacity, expertise and abilities as a result of its work on the Tar Ponds project.

Membertou Remediation Group

Membertou Remediation Group is a Membertou Community Construction company and is operated under the direction of Darrell Bernard. Again, this company hires, leases and partners when added resources are needed. The business operates out of the Membertou First Nation Community, which is located about a mile from the Tar Ponds site. This companies experience in working on the Cooling Pond has expanded their capacity, experience and capabilities. This includes firsthand experience in the unique Solidification and Stabilization process being used at the Sydney Tar Ponds project.
